Justin David Blau, known to fans as 3LAU, was born in Syosset, New York, on January 9, 1991. Hailing from an artistic family, he picked up piano and guitar at an early age, honing his musical talent even as a child. In his early teenage years, he relocated with his family to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he attended high school at The Meadows School and later pursued a finance degree at Washington University in St. Louis. However, the allure of music was always present, beckoning him to embrace his passion.
Known professionally as 3LAU, his musical journey took a significant turn in 2011. While on vacation in Sweden, Blau discovered electronic dance music and began producing mashups upon his return to college. His professional career launched under the moniker 3LAU and by June 2011, he was sharing his mashups on YouTube. Achieving recognition quickly, his tracks "Girls Who Save the World" and "All Night Long" found favor in the electronic music world. He also marked an early success with his remix of Tiesto's "Work Hard, Play Hard".
Blau's music style encapsulates various genres like electro house, dubstep, deep house, and progressive house, all marked by a melodic take on dance music. With tracks like “How You Love Me,” “Is It Love,” “Fire,” “On My Mind,” and “Hot Water,” he established his reputation in the industry, even remixing for top artists like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, and Ariana Grande. In addition, he collaborated with the likes of gamer Ninja and HYO from Girls' Generation. Throughout his career, he performed at renowned festivals like Electric Zoo, EDC Vegas, Lollapalooza, and Life Is Beautiful, touring internationally.
In 2016, Blau expanded his influence by launching Blume Records, an independent label that utilized streaming to raise funds for charitable causes. Two years later, he released his debut album, Ultraviolet, which claimed the top spot on iTunes' Electronic Chart. Notable collaborations on this album include Carly Paige, Nevve, Emma Hewitt, Max Schneider, Said the Sky, and Neonheart. In the same year, he announced the launch of OMF (Our Music Festival), the first blockchain-powered music festival, which was headlined by Zedd.
3LAU’s contributions extend beyond music into philanthropy. Through Blume Records, the first not-for-profit dance music label which he founded in 2016, he has directed profits from all songs to charitable causes. Notably, he has raised over $200,000 for non-profit organization Pencils of Promise, leading to the construction of a seven-classroom school in Guatemala and funding for clean water, education, and teacher development programs. As of 2018, he had completed the construction of another school in Guatemala, a testament to his commitment to philanthropy and social change.
