Anthony Ramos Biography

Anthony Ramos Martinez, an accomplished American actor and singer, was born on November 1, 1991, in Brooklyn, New York. Of Puerto Rican descent, he was raised in the Hope Gardens Apartments, an affordable housing complex in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with his mother, older brother, and younger sister. Despite dealing with his father's struggles with substance abuse, Ramos found his passion in singing and acting. He attended Halsey Junior High School where he performed Motown songs in a group named Halsey Trio and later graduated from New Utrecht High School in 2009. Post-high school, he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy on a full scholarship from the Seinfeld Scholarship and graduated from its musical theatre program in 2011.

Ramos' acting career took off in 2011 when he secured roles in various regional and touring musical productions, including Usnavi de la Vega in a 2012 production of In the Heights. In 2014, he performed in Heart and Lights at Radio City Music Hall, a dance show with the Rockettes, which was canceled during previews. During the same year, he auditioned for the off-Broadway production of Hamilton at The Public Theater and landed the role. His breakthrough came in 2015 when he originated the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamilton, earning him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited Series or Movie for his performance in the 2020 stage recording of the play.

His success in Hamilton led to various film and TV roles. In 2018, Ramos had a supporting role in A Star Is Born, starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The same year, he secured the role of Usnavi de la Vega in the film adaptation of In the Heights, which was released in 2021. The film brought Ramos critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, despite its box-office performance. In 2021, he was cast in the lead role in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, set to be released in 2023, and he was also cast in key roles in the superhero streaming series Ironheart, and the sequel to the 1996 film Twister, both in 2023.

Parallel to his acting career, Ramos also made his mark in the recording industry. He appeared on the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton in 2015, and in 2017, he was one of the vocalists on Lin-Manuel Miranda's song "Almost Like Praying". In 2017, he released two tracks, "Freedom" and " Common Ground", from his first solo EP, The Freedom EP. By 2019, he had signed with Republic Records and released his debut album, The Good & The Bad, in October. His second album, Love and Lies, was released in June 2021.

On a personal note, Ramos began dating actress Jasmine Cephas Jones in 2015 after meeting her during rehearsals for Hamilton. The couple got engaged on Christmas Eve 2018, but unfortunately, they ended their engagement in late 2021 and officially parted ways. Despite this setback, Ramos continues to rise as a star, balancing his successful careers in acting and music.
