Anne Jacqueline Hathaway, born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, was the child of Gerald Hathaway, a lawyer, and Kate McCauley, a theater actress. Her early years were deeply influenced by Catholicism, even contemplating becoming a nun, but the realization that her brother was gay led her to question her faith. She is now not tied to any religion, with her beliefs continuously evolving. Her love for acting blossomed during her high school years at Millburn High School, which led her to study drama at the Paper Mill Playhouse of New Jersey, where she already had some experience and had been nominated for the “Nacimiento Estrella Award.”
Hathaway continued her pursuit of acting at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, then transferred to the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She became the only teenager admitted to the intensive action study program by the award-winning Barrow Group and honed her skills in dance at the Broadway Dance Center. Her remarkable vocal ability allowed her to perform at two concerts at Carnegie Hall in 1998 as part of the All-Eastern US High School Honors Chorus. Despite facing obstacles in her early career, like her height causing her to be rejected at castings, she eventually landed a role in the television series, Family Affairs, earning her a nomination for best dramatic actress at the 2000 Teen Choice Awards.
In 2002, Hathaway debuted on the big screen alongside Christopher Gorham in the drama The Other Side of Heaven. However, it was her role as Mia Thermopolis in Garry Marshall’s family comedy The Princess Diaries that catapulted her to worldwide fame at the tender age of 19. She worked alongside seasoned artists such as Julie Andrews, Hector Elizondo, and Heather Matarazzo in the film, which was a global success. Unfortunately, her subsequent films like The Other Side of Heaven and Ella Enchanted didn't achieve the same level of success.
In 2004, Hathaway made a critical career decision by declining the offer to be part of the film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera due to contract complications with Walt Disney Pictures. Instead, she reprised her role in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and lent her voice to the animated film Hoodwinked! (2005), demonstrating her musical prowess in several musical interventions during the tape. Hathaway's roles varied over time, securing her multiple awards, including an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Les Miserables.
Under the direction of Tom Hooper, Hathaway gave a stunning performance in Les Miserables, where she transformed drastically for the role. The film premiered on December 25, 2012, in the United States and Hathaway's performance garnered widespread acclaim, leading to an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Beyond her professional achievements, Hathaway's personal life thrived when she married fellow actor Adam Shulman in 2012, and the couple welcomed their first child, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, four years later.
