The Tubes were pioneers in merging rock music with theatrical performance, leaving a significant mark on the music industry during the 1970s and 1980s. They originally formed in San Francisco in 1972, with a lineup that included Fee Waybill, Roger Steen, Prairie Prince, Michael Cotten, Vince Welnick, and Rick Anderson. The band's name, "The Tubes," was a reference to the series of pneumatic tubes used in banks to transport documents. It was a nod to their satirical and unconventional approach to music.
The Tubes were early adopters of music videos, producing a collection of videos released in 1982, showcasing versions of their hits like "White Punks on Dope," "Mondo Bondage," and "Talk to Ya Later." These videos, directed by Russell Mulcahy and filmed at Shepperton Studios, were an extension of their dynamic stage shows, known for their extravagant props and costumes.
Their live performances were a spectacle of creativity and satire. Each song became a production number, complete with meticulously crafted props and costumes. The band's penchant for satire extended to every aspect of their shows, referencing mainstream films, pop culture, and literature. From beach movie parodies to S&M-themed performances and game show antics, their stage shows were visually captivating.
The Tubes' live acts featured a rotating cast of performers, including tap dancers and acrobats, choreographed by Kenny Ortega. The group's shows drew inspiration from various sources, including mainstream films like "Dr. Strangelove," B-movies like "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman," and medleys of television themes. These extravagant productions, while earning them a reputation as one of the most entertaining live acts, also left the band in debt to their record label, A&M Records.
After their departure from A&M Records, The Tubes signed with Capitol Records and aimed for a new musical direction. Producer David Foster helped them find their new sound, and they recorded "Gonna Get it Next Time" for the soundtrack of "Modern Problems." Their album "The Completion Backward Principle" (1981) featured the hit "Talk to Ya Later" and marked their first Top 40 hit in the United States with "Don't Want to Wait Anymore." Their satirical take on corporate America resonated with audiences, and they embarked on successful tours in the U.S. and Europe, further enhancing their reputation as an electrifying live act.
The Tubes' influence on the music scene is undeniable. They merged rock music with theatrical performance in a way that challenged conventions and brought humor and satire to their art. While their commercial success may not have rivaled some of their contemporaries, their creativity and innovation continue to be celebrated by fans of avant-garde rock and theatrical music performances.
