Bananarama, a British and Irish pop group, was formed in 1980 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward. After Fahey left in 1988, Jacquie O'Sullivan briefly joined, and then the trio became a duo. They achieved immense success on both pop and dance charts, earning a Guinness World Record for the highest number of chart entries by an all-female group and 30 UK Top 50 singles between 1982 and 2009.
Their notable UK top-10 hits include "It Ain't What You Do..." (1982), "Cruel Summer" (1983), "Love in the First Degree" (1987), and a U.S. number one hit with "Venus" (1986). They were part of the Second British Invasion in the US. In 1984, they participated in the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and topped the Australian ARIA chart with "Wow!" (1987).
Siobhan Fahey left in 1988 to form Shakespears Sister, and Jacquie O'Sullivan replaced her. This lineup had UK top-five hits with "I Want You Back" (1988) and "Help!" (1989). In 1989, they embarked on a world tour and had hits with "Cruel Summer" and "Only Your Love" (1990).
After O'Sullivan's departure in 1991, Dallin and Woodward continued as a duo, releasing further top-30 hits. Fahey briefly rejoined in 2017, leading to a UK and North American tour between 2017 and 2018.
Bananarama's early years saw them emerge from the punk and post-punk scenes of the late '70s and early '80s. They recorded their first demo, "Aie a Mwana," in 1981, which led to their signing with Decca. Their collaboration with Fun Boy Three on "It Ain't What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It)" (1982) brought them their first UK Top 5 hit.
Their success peaked with albums like "Deep Sea Skiving" (1983) and "Bananarama" (1984), which included hits like "Shy Boy" and "Cruel Summer." The international number one hit "Venus" came with their third album, "True Confessions" (1986), and a shift towards a more glamorous image.
The group faced lineup changes, creative challenges, and a transition to dance-oriented Europop with "Wow!" (1987). Their hit "I Heard a Rumour" (1987) showcased their resilience. After Jacquie O'Sullivan joined, they had further hits and charity singles like "Help!" and "Love, Truth and Honesty."
In 2005, Bananarama made a comeback in the British dance charts with remixes of their early hit "Really Saying Something." They continued to release new music, with tracks like "Move in My Direction" and "Look on the Floor (Hypnotic Tango)" in 2005. In 2009, they released "Viva" and toured.
The duo kept performing live, and in 2017, the original trio reunited for a successful tour. Their recent work includes the albums "In Stereo" (2019) and "Masquerade" (2022), celebrating four decades of music. Bananarama remains a lasting and influential presence in the world of pop music.
